Forward Into Danger
Many malcontents, runaways, and farmers behind on taxes have found through the centuries that an overarching authority does not fit them well. Through the centuries, these humans have fled the reaches of the four clans, settling in lands not yet claimed by anyone. As the years passed, these isolated homesteads and tiny thorps remain very isolated, but in some instances petty warlords and charismatic leaders have managed to band together larger groups of people, for mutual protection and an easier way of life. Largely divorced from clan politics, these folks are viewed by the various clans as “backward”, or “ignorant”. While in many cases this is true, several Clanless settlements are minor powers in their own right. Separated by vast tracts of forest and patches of the Sundered, these people are left to fend for themselves. Occasionally, they will brave the distance and launch raids on the various clans. In the last several decades, the Rathan Empire has undertaken several military campaigns against these bandits, in what has come to be known as the Wars of Pacification. Occasionally, a Clanless will leave home, venturing into the world on their own or in a small group.
-Clanless player characters gain a +2 bonus to any one Craft or Profession skill, along with a bonus clan language. Everyone works to survive in the wilds, and anyone venturing into civilized lands must know a real tongue, as the Clanless’s mishmash of dialects would be incomprehensible to others.
